Built-in bookshelves add character and storage to almost any room. We’ve built them around fireplaces, along home office walls, and under stairs. Unlike freestanding shelves, they’re made to fit the space exactly, so they look like part of the house from day one.
Planning starts with what the shelves will hold. Most books fit on shelves about 10 to 12 inches deep. Art, baskets, and media gear often need 14 inches or more. We usually make most shelves adjustable, since what a family stores today rarely matches what it’ll store in 5 years.
Many of the built-ins we design pair open shelves with closed cabinets below. The lower doors and drawers hide toys, files, and cables, while the shelves above show off favorite pieces. That mix keeps a room from feeling cluttered. Slim LED strips or picture lights can make the whole wall glow at night.
Style ties the shelves to the rest of the home. Painted finishes feel crisp and bright, and natural wood brings warmth. Crown molding and matching hardware help the piece blend in. We’ve also folded desks, window seats, and small bars into built-ins.
Placement deserves some thought as well, since a built-in beside a sunny window can fade books and finishes over the years. We look at light, outlets, and nearby doors before we draw anything, so the finished piece works with the room instead of fighting it.
Strength matters more than people expect. A 36-inch shelf loaded with hardcovers can bow over time, so we plan shelf length, thickness, and support from the start.
Good built-in bookshelves feel like they’ve always been there, and that’s the goal we design for.
