Read on to find out some tips regarding decorating the interiors of your home.

  • Never begin at the furniture store

Many people might have heard the advice to avoid grocery shopping when you feel hungry as it might lead to poor choices. The same is the case when it comes to furniture stores. Do not shop for furniture in a panic because you have an empty home. You might be looking for a sofa and if you pick a striped one just because it looks attractive in the store without even considering the size of your living room, the results would be different from what you think. You will have to decorate the rest of the room based on the sofa. If it is too large for the space, it would look awkward. Measure the size of the room and pick the sofa accordingly.

  • Know the measurements of each room

A large sofa might easily overpower a small room and the remaining furniture might lack importance. Before you begin designing, measure the length and width of each room you wish to decorate. This should include ceiling height and elements such as columns, stairs and other obstructions. Measure the window openings along with the wall space below and above it to get window coverings or curtains. Most people make the mistake of buying things that are of the wrong size such as sofas that do not fit through the doorways or in the room, tables that are too small, desks that are too big and nightstands that look dull in the space. If you’re carefully measuring your space, such problems could be easily avoided.

  • Create a floor plan

Once you have the measurements of the room, design a floor plan that would provide a bird’s-eye view of the dream home. Everyone should begin with the floor plan as you need to know the space very well. Action is to draw the floor plan in the old fashioned way with the help of a pencil, paper and a ruler. However, most professional designers make use of drafting software. At times some people make use of apps that aim to make it easy for homeowners to make simple floor plans. Some apps automate measurements with the smartphone camera. However, it is a good idea to double-check those numbers in such cases. Once you have the outline of the space you could start experimenting with the placement of furniture and make sure that the footprint of each piece is scaled to match the size of the drawing.

  • Decide how you want to live

This could be a tricky part and there are no right or wrong answers. Rooms could be modern or traditional, relaxed or formal and cool or warm. You could decide how to live in a given space comfortably and design the room accordingly. You should have a clear idea of what you would be doing, how many people would live in the house, whether there would be kids, your ambitions and so on.  The decoration of a home for people who regularly host parties should differ from home for someone who prefers to have home-cooked food. The same is the case with the living rooms of different people with different lifestyles.

  • Imitate the pros

Check out the magazines, design books and online resources. This would help in sharpening your style. Figure out the style that would attract you the most. Once you identify the images you like you could analyse the details and implement them in your project. You would get an idea of the type of furniture that would suit a particular room designed in a particular style.

  • Make use of tapes

You could implement ideas on a floor plan by making use of painter’s tape to outline the placement of furniture on floors and against walls. A colourful tape such as blue tape could be used to box out various elements. Consider the placement of the rug, how long it should be, how the coffee table would be placed and so on.

  • Decide on a Budget

Make sure that you’re strategic and plan well on how to spend your money. Proper planning would provide a roadmap on how to divide the cost of things between rooms. You could even make an exception and save up to buy a beautiful dining table if you purchase the furniture with a proper plan. However, to pay for it, you have to think about where you could cut the cost.

  • Plan the Phases

Refinishing hardwood floors, finishing drywall and painting ceilings could be a messy job. Have such type of work completed before you move on to adding furniture or accessories into the space. If the situation is unavoidable, seal the furniture under plastic drop clothes and accessories in boxes with tape to protect them.

How things should go

No living room chair sofa should be isolated on its own. When people sit on them, they should need a space to place a book or a drink and a light to read something. Consider placing a coffee table or end table that is within easy reach of each seat along with a table or a floor lamp. No one would like to stub their toe on a chair leg. You will want to make sure that there are clear paths for walking through the living room and that no furniture blocks the part or makes it necessary to squeeze by the way. If you plan to have a TV in your living room, for a Wall Mount or a media unit to hold it as well as a path for cables that would look neat.

If you host dinner quite often, you could have a sideboard near the dining table where you could serve the guests in one space.
