Decking is a perfect addition to every back garden or commercial space.  Decking for your garden extends the living space of your home by turning a section of your yard into an extra useable room for relaxing, dining and entertaining.  It can also raise the market value of your home, so you can see it as an investment. Here we are going to take a look at the hazards and benefits of decking.

Most people choose decking for their garden as it is easy to install, and you get great results.

    Hardwood Decking

Hardwood decking is the most popular material choice for decking.  It looks appealing and looks and feels great.  Although there are downsides to it too.  It can be very expensive and will require maintenance and will need oiling and staining on an annual basis.

    Softwood Decking

Softwood decking is more cost effective and incredibly durable.  It can be stained in a variety of colours.  It also does require a lot of maintenance though and can deteriorate and turn grey due to lack of maintenance.

    Composite Decking

Composite decking is becoming more popular nowadays.  Made of recycled plastic and wood grain and naturally resistant to mould and insects and less prone to rot.  This is more expensive than softwood especially if composite is used for the frame as well as the decking.  There is also no option to change the colour once the initial stain colour has been selected.

What Are The Hazards Associated With Decking

There can be hazards you need to think about when you are going to choose your decking. According to Andrew from slip resistant decking manufacturer Rubadeck “Wood decking will be slippery in autumn/winter months which is a big hazard.  If you have children especially or disabled or elderly people using the decking, then you would not want to take this risk. “There are types of decking that can be bought that are non-slip so you can eliminate this risk entirely.  Debris and weeds can accumulate on the decking also if it is not regularly maintained.

How To Maintain And Clean Decking

All decking will need some kind of maintenance, some more than others.  You should always make sure your decking is clean no matter what kind you have, whether you have a decking that you can just wash off and brush or a decking that will require more maintenance.  If you want your decking to look as good as new you will have to either spend a lot of time on the maintenance of it or buy a decking that doesn’t require so much maintenance.  Wood decking will need a lot of work done to it annually such as cleaning, treating and general maintenance to it.  If you buy a decking that is non-slip it maybe be more expensive in the initial outlay, but it will be well worth the money for the non-slip feature and for you not to have to spend all of your time maintaining it.  Your decking should be for you and your family to enjoy not to spend all of your time making sure it looks as good as it did when you bought it.
